'Between Worlds': The Art of Christine Clark

Glasgow Gallery

In advance of Christine Clark's upcoming solo show, Sam Reilly speaks to the artist in an attempt to clarify the mysterious nature of her work.

Speaking to Christine Clark about her artwork proves to be, in a key respect, very similar to the experience of viewing the paintings themselves. Both begin with looking for clues – for moments of clarity when the meaning of these artworks, elusively allusive as they always are, suddenly becomes apparent, and explicable. When Christine suggests that "switches, plugs and taps appear in my work as I like the idea of ‘switching off’ from reality", I wonder why I didn't realise this before. In order to enter into her lavish fantasies, we are being invit…

Invite to Coast & Country exhibition launch with Whisky Tasting, Friday 16th October

Glasgow Gallery

Landscape painting in Scotland has a heritage as rich and varied as the iconic rolling hills and rugged coastlines themselves. We are delighted at ScotlandArt to invite you to our latest exhibition, ‘Coast and Country’, showcasing the talents of four of the most celebrated and distinctive painters to be working in this tradition today.

Robert Kelsey, Sarah Carrington, Christopher Forsey and Allison Young have all, over the course of their highly successful careers, developed their own unique and evocative means of responding to the particular representative challenge which these locations provoke – the flickering of the heather-coated mountainsides beneath fickle Highland skies, or else the p…

An interview with Karen Cairns: This Gleaming City

Glasgow Gallery

In advance of her highly anticipated solo show, 'This Gleaming City', launching on 5th September at ScotlandArt, Sam Reilly speaks to Karen Cairns about her practice, inspirations and how she reinterprets beloved cityscapes so that they are at once entirely unexpected and instantly recognisable.

To imagine one of Glasgow’s best-loved views – Buchanan Street, say, thronged with shoppers and flanked by all those spidery metal awnings, jutting from the sandstone - and then to compare it with its recreation in a painting by Karen Cairns, is to realise a remarkable process by which each – the mental image, and the artistic impression – is transformed by the other. It is almost as though the str…

An Interview with Joan Somerville: 'There & Back Again'

Glasgow Gallery

As she prepares to launch her new one-woman show at ScotlandArt.com after an eight-year hiatus, Glasgow painter Joan Somerville, 54, talks to Sam Reilly about her recent clubbing exploits, why her paintings are like ‘pub grub’, and why she is taking more pleasure from them than ever before.

Pouting divas in their gaudy fineries; sly, dark-suited men leering from stage-left; the outsized frames of a couple mid-catfight – all the vibrant everyday comedies we’d expect to see acted out in a Joan Somerville painting are here. But as she unveils her latest collection of work, Joan informs me that ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ depicts a scene with which the artist is far from familiar.

‘In my …

Celebrating Scotland's Artists: Announcing ScotlandArt's new exhibition programme

Glasgow Gallery

One of the hallmarks of Scottish art has always been the deep importance of the community which surrounds and supports it. You only have to think of the Glasgow Boys to realise how painters transformed the European art scene of the late nineteenth century with their commitment to depicting the ordinary lives of the community around them – urban scenes, people at work, which cut through the sentimental, parochial renditions of Scottish history with their unabashed, and loyal realism. There are countless memoirs full of vibrant, often hilarious anecdotes depicting Scotland’s cultural figures as flawed and fun, friendly and frenetic. I will always remember reading, in the late Stanley Roger Gre…
